Prepared by Leland Consultants, Inc. a sub - contractor for EDAW, Inc.
Population and Household Growth
The City of Louisville is located in the western portion of the high - growth northern Denver
Metro Area (See Figure 1). Over the next 25 years, this area is expected to grow at twice the rate
of the region as a whole. Much of this growth is projected to be in southwestern Weld County,
Broomfield County and western Adams County. Louisville grew at a compound average annual
growth rate of 3.1 % between 1990 and 2003 -- a considerably faster rate than either Boulder
County or the Denver Metro Area over this period, but not as fast as the surrounding
communities of Broomfield, Lafayette, and Superior. Over that same time period, Louisville's
average household size declined from 2.68 to 2.62, while average household sizes in Boulder
County and the Denver Metro Area increased. This is a reflection of Louisville's older- skewing
population.
Table 1
Population and Household Growth
Population Growth
CAAGR*
1990 2000 2003 1990 -2003
Louisville
Lafayette
Superior
Broomfield
Boulder County
Denver Metro Area (6- County)
12,870
14,552
251
24,636
225,339
1,848,319
18,937
23,197
9,011
38,272
291,288
2,400,570
19,080
25,388
10,932
42,274
313,586
2,596,394
3.1%
4.4%
33.7%
4.2%
2.6%
2.6%
Household Growth
1990
2000
CAAGR*
2003 1990 -2003
Louisville
Lafayette
Superior
Broomfield
Boulder County
Denver Metro Area (6- County)
4,779 7,216 7,270
5,479 8,844 9,657 4.5%
88 3,381 4,111 34.4%
8,734 13,842 15,215 4.4%
88,402 114,680 122,994 2.6%
737,806 939,971 1,007,303 2.4%
3.3%
* Compound Average Annual Growth Rate.
Source: US Census Bureau; Denver Regional Council of Governments; ESRI, Inc.; City of Louisville; and
Leland Consulting Group.
Age Distribution and Race /Ethnicity
As shown in Table 2, Louisville's age distribution skews slightly older than surrounding
communities in Boulder County. Of particular significance, Louisville has a higher share of "baby
boomers" (45 to 54 age group) moving toward retirement. With the exception of Superior,
Louisville is also less ethnically diverse than these communities.
