"Old Town" Louisville Historical Building Survey Page 2 <br />2.0 THE PROJECT AREA <br />With a population of just over twenty thousand inhabitants, the City of Louisville is <br />located in southeastern Boulder County, at 5300 feet elevation, between the Coal Creek <br />and South Boulder Creek drainages. This area, situated north of the U.S. Highway 36 <br />corridor between Denver and Boulder, has been experiencing tremendous commercial <br />and residential growth during the past two decades. The project area generally lies west <br />of Colorado Highway 42 (Empire Road), and south of South Boulder Road, a major east - <br />west thoroughfare which connects Louisville with the cities of Boulder to the west and <br />Lafayette to the east. <br />Known as the "Old Town" Overlay District, the project area is more specifically comprised <br />of approximately sixty-eight square blocks, encompassing Louisville's downtown <br />commercial district and the city's core residential neighborhoods. Bisected along its <br />eastern fringe by the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks, the project area is located <br />entirely in Section 8, Township 1 South, Range 69 West, of the Sixth Principal Meridian.. <br />The survey area consists of approximately 195 square acres, including the city's oldest <br />platted subdivisions. These are: the Original Town of Louisville (1878); Jefferson Place <br />Addition (1880); Caledonia Place Addition (1890); Johnson's First Addition (1890); Acme <br />Place Addition (1893); Barclay Place Addition (1897); D. ParLois Addition; Pleasant Hill <br />Addition (1900); Capitol Hill Addition (1904); Louisville Heights Addition (1904); Nicola <br />DiGiacomo Addition (1906); East Louisville Addition (1906); Murphy Place Addition <br />(1907); and Kimberly Addition (1911) . <br />Principal north -south streets in the survey area include Lee Avenue, Front Street, County <br />Road, Main Street, LaFarge Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, Grant Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, <br />Garfield Avenue, and McKinley Avenue. Primary east -west streets include Rex Street, <br />Parkview Street, Hutchinson Street, Elm Street, Pine Street, Spruce Street, Walnut Street, <br />South Street, Short Street, and Caledonia Street. <br />
