BUSH, P.E.
REGIONAL ENGINEER
KEN CHRISTENSEN
FIELD REPRESENTATIVE
Ceiling Height in Dwellings
Dear Mr. Stephan:
This letter will amplify and confltul the statements
made to you in our telephone conversation on Monday
the 17th. As I indicated to you, furred areas in
corridors as well as inhabitable rooms, storage rooms
and laundry rooms, shall not be furred down to less
than 7 feet measured from the floor to the lowest
projection from the ceiling. This means in effect
that each of the areas just enumerated must have
everywhere a minimum clearance of 7 feet under thQ
lowest projection from the ceiling. These statements
"are based upon Section 1407-Ca) of the Uniform Building
Code and specifically the first and third paragraphs
of that section.
There is an exception as indicated in the second
paragraph of Section 1407 which does allow a lower
ceiling height in some rooms but this is only in the
case where the ceiling is a sloping ceiling due usually
to the fact that it might be an attic room and directly
under the roof.
The lower ceiling height is petiilitted in a room which
has a sloped ceiling as just described due to the fact
that the occupants are aware of the fact that the ceiling
is sloped and, therefore, would not be faced with the
hazard of an unforeseen projection projecting below the
usual ceiling height.
Therefore, where the ceiling is not a sloping ceiling,
the minimum height of 7 feet must be preserved in the
areas described.
Sincerely,
,4
—ry„vlv-!C72 (`/ 1 . s....Gf.2.,/G/• yz
Vincent R.
