Gigi Yang
Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Cultural Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
June 2024
Cityo
Om Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
1140 Main History
Legal Description: LOT 1 PAYNE
Year of Construction: 1898
Summary: The history of 1140 Main is notable for its early ownership by the Williams and Morgan
families, exemplifying the growth of Louisville in its earliest coal mining history and civic life. Also
significant is residence by the Webster family for over 30 years, including their role in the development
of Louisville's downtown business district as multi -generational business owners of The Hub store
located at 800 Main, and as community leaders. This address is also unusual for being one half of a
subdivision consisting of only two properties.
The history of 1140 Main is linked to the history of 940 Caledonia. Prior to 1982, both houses were part
of one lot with the legal description of "Lot 7 & the north 10 feet of Lot 8, block 16, Caledonia
Place." Much of the early history of 1140 Main included here was written as part of the history of 940
Caledonia and is now updated with this separate report.
Development of Caledonia Place Addition and Payne Subdivision
The subdivision in which this property is located is Caledonia Place. This subdivision was platted
and recorded with Boulder County in 1890 by James Cannon, Howard Morris, and Henry Brooks.
It was the fourth addition to original Louisville, which had been platted in 1878.
Before it was subdivided, 1140 Main had the legal description of "Lot 7 & the north 10 feet of
Lot 8, block 16, Caledonia Place." In 1952, a Boulder County Assessor card was created for 940
Caledonia, identifying two addresses on the same property. In 1982, owners Wade and Beth
Payne, subdivided the lot and created the Payne Subdivision with legal descriptions of "Lot 1
Payne" for 1140 Main and "Lot 2 Payne" for 940 Caledonia.
