CITY OF LOUISVILLE
COMMUNITY UPDATE
APRIL/MAY 2 005
CITY COUNCIL A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Mayor Charles L. Sisk IT IS TIME TO BE PROACTIVE
303.665.6889
siskc @ci.louisville.co.us Asr elected officials, the City Council and I are invested with making sound and
easoned decisions for the City of Louisville. We are entrusted with responsi-
Ward I bilities that are multi-dimensional and sometimes
Dave Clabots controversial. The landscape of Louisville is chang- 1
303.673.9116 ing and some of our citizens are very resistant and oirr4
clabotd @ci.louisville.co.us concerned about the implications of our actions in
regard to the new comprehensive plan.
John Keany Many cities revise their comprehensive plans
303.665.4818 every five years, but we are now embarking on the
keanyj @ci.louisville.co.us absorption of the last sixteen years as well as trying •
to plan for the future with the Comprehensive Plan
Ward II 2005 Update. We are attempting to address the future
Sheri Marsella of Louisville for all of our residents.
303.665.3276 Can we please everyone? Clearly not, but we can Mayor Chuck Sisk
marsels @ci.louisville.co.us rely on data that we have obtained through any number of avenues. We will also
consider the opinions of citizens as they have been given at all stages of the compre-
Michele Van Pelt hensive plan process and from the citizen's survey, as well as the recommendations of
303.673.9235 the Planning Commission.
vanpelm @ci.louisville.co.us Ultimately, the decision rests with the City Council and Mayor. It clearly would
Ward III have been easier not to embark on this comprehensive plan update. However,we
owe the citizens this opportunity to define our community, rather than allowing
Don Brown outside factors to determine our fate.
303.673.0648 Some of you remember the television program Dragnet, where Sgt.Joe Friday
brownd @ci.louisville.co.us stated"Just the facts,ma'am, just the facts." Here are some economic facts for our
City. Through January 2005,we have had six consecutive months of declining sales
Arnold Levihn tax revenues. Clearly a trend has developed and we need to be responsive to those
303.665.2024 numbers.
levihna @ci.louisville.co.us Of concern specifically are the revenues for November 2004 through January
2005. Those sales tax revenues decreased in comparison to the same months for the
City Manager Bill Simmons previous year. Some would choose to ignore these numbers as aberrations. I think we
303.335.4532 would be foolish to follow that perilous path.
simmonw @ci.louisville.co.us What contributed to the declining sales tax revenues, the lifeblood of our commu-
nity?We need look no further than our neighboring communities with Wild Oats in
City Council Meetings Superior, King Soopers in Lafayette, and in general Flatiron Crossing in Broomfield.
are held the first and third But what lies ahead, you ask?A new Home Depot is to be one of the anchors in
Tuesday of each month at Boulder's Twenty Ninth Street redevelopment and Lafayette has just announced a new
7:00 PM, City Hall Super Wal-Mart within several miles of Louisville. The competition is only going to
749 Main Street grow.
As part of our comprehensive plan,we need to address these issues and our
economic fabric. In my estimation,we can not afford to let other factors dictate our
For further information future;we need to be proactive while we are in a relatively strong economic position.
about City activities and The facts are disturbing and we must respond. I call on our citizens for action and not
projects, please visit reaction. We pledge to lead proactively and reasonably. Doing nothing,in my estima-
tion,is not an alternative.
www.cilouisville.co.us.
Additional information on the Comprehensive Plan 2005 Update is available on page 10.
