Winter 2013
Communi Update
WEiiviiie
A Message from the Mayor
A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity
City Council in every difficulty. -Winston Churchhill
Mayor Robert P. Muckle Thave had the pleasure, over the last few weeks, of talking with Louisville grade school
303.981.0697 lkids about what it's like to be the mayor. I've done this before and our conversations
bobm @louisvilleco.gov about the role of the City government are always very thought provoking for me.The
student's questions generally center around the role of the government in keeping people
• Ward I safe and fixing problems.
The historic flood of 2013 left devastation throughout the region, leaving towns like
Emily Jasiak Lyons and Jamestown without infrastructure, or tax bases, and with many homes and
303.550.6070
emilyj @louisvilleco.gov businesses simply gone. The City of Longmont estimates damages in the vicinity of$150
million. We are fortunate to have been spared these kinds of damages, but there are still
Jay Keany many homeowners with major water damage and there is extensive damage to municipal
303.665.4818 infrastructure. It was amazing to see our local stream, Coal Creek, transformed from a me-
jayk@louisvilleco.gov andering stream a few inches deep and a few feet wide, into a raging torrent over topping
• Ward II Dillon Road, tearing through Coal Creek Golf Course and the Dutch Creek Open Space
before destroying the County Road bridge by Community Park. In all, the City sustained
Susan Loo damage to the golf course on the order of$6-7 million and destruction of Coal Creek
303.665.4945 Trail with reconstruction costs of about$1 million. The cost of replacing the County Road
susanl @louisvilleco.gov bridge is still being determined but is likely to be around$1.5 million.
Also, much of the year the City's water supply is provided from South Boulder Creek.
Jeff Lipton We take water off the creek just inside Eldorado Canyon State Park where the creek caused
303.665.9776 major damage to our water diversion infrastructure, so we were unable to deliver water via
lipton @louisvilleco.gov
that source after the flood. Fortunately we have a redundant water supply so water deliv-
• Ward III ery was never interrupted during the flood and the South Boulder Creek system has been
repaired and is back on line. Still, there is about$1 million in damage to the water supply
Hank Dalton system. These damages along with other, less urgent repairs from the flood, leave the city
303.926.9930 with over$10 million in overall damages. This is a large number in a city with an annual
hankd @louisvilleco.gov
Continued on page 2
AshleyStolzmann Comcast Franchise Renewal
303.570.9614 The City is continuing work on a franchise renewal with Comcast. At this time staff is
ashleys @louisvilleco.gov still gathering information from residents about what they would like to see addressed in a
City Manager new franchise agreement.
Malcolm Fleming On the City's web site you can now find a compilation of comments staff has received
303.335.4532 and the results of a web survey regarding customer service issues.Additionally, you can
malcolmf @louisvilleco.gov read newly posted information delineating the specific items that can be addressed in the
franchise according to Federal law. With that information in mind,we will be hosting an
City Council Meetings are additional Open House on Monday,December 16 from 4-6 PM (City Hall,749 Main
held the first and third Street). This will be a chance for residents to review the specific franchise items that are up
Tuesdays of each month at
7:00 PM at City Hall, for negotiation and give input on those items.
749 Main Street. Staff continues to take comments on the franchise. They may be submitted via e-mail
to MeredythM@LouisvilleCO.gov or by phone to 303.335.4536.A public hearing on the
To find out in which proposed franchise has moved to the February 18 (tentative) City Council Meeting(7:00
Ward you live, please call PM).
