Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
March 2016
CityqL Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
1100 Main Street History
Legal Description: W 100 FT LOT 12 & S 12 1/2 FT OF W 100 FT LOT 11 BLK 16 CALEDONIA PLACE
Date of Construction: 1892
Summary: This was the home of the Weir family from 1892 until 1978.
Development of Caledonia Place Addition
The subdivision in 1100 Main is located is Caledonia Place. This subdivision was platted and
recorded with Boulder County in 1890 by James Cannon, Howard Morris, and Henry Brooks. It
was the fourth addition to original Louisville, which had been platted in 1878.
Weir Ownership and Residency, 1892-1978; Discussion of Date of Construction
The parcel for 1100 Main originally consisted of two full lots: Lot 11 and Lot 12 of Block 16 in
the Caledonia Place subdivision. 1100 Main was owned by the Weir family, who came from
Scotland, for many decades. James Henry Weir (1865-1929) and Joan Swan Weir (1861-1925)
came to the U.S. in the 1880s and gradually came west. James Weir was a miner in Louisville.
According to a 1995 letter written to the Louisville Historical Museum by the granddaughter of
the Weirs, Joan Stier Tuley, "I spent a good deal of my childhood in Louisville. My grandparents,
James Henry and Joan Swan Weir arrived there in 1890 with 3 little girls [Jessie, Euphemia, and
Margaret]. While their new home at 1100 Main St. was being built they lived across the street
.... They moved into their own new home in 1892, and in the ensuing years had 5 more children
— 3 girls and 2 boys. No one except a member of our own family ever lived there until I sold the
property .... Aunt Jessie Mitton lived there until her death."
The following photo of the Weir family was taken in around 1890 when the family first arrived
in Louisville:
1
