Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
April 2017
la Cityof
Om Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
844 Main St. History
Legal Description: Lot 12, Block 2, Original Louisville
Year of Construction: circa 1900-1904
Summary: This building was the Henning Mortuary and Henning family home starting in
1923 and continuing for several decades. G.R. Henning and Marguerite Lay Henning
played important leadership and charitable roles in the town's affairs.
Overview of 820, 836, & 844 Main Street, Louisville, Colorado
This report has been prepared as one of three related reports on 820, 836, and 844
Main. (This overview section is the same in all three reports.) These three properties are
known as the Marketplace Building, Mossoni House, and Henning Mortuary and they
are located on the northern section of the east side of the 800 block of Main Street in
Louisville. They are owned by 844 Main Street Associates LLC. The properties occupy 31/2
lots out of the 6 lots on that block, which is one of the blocks of original Louisville
platted by Louis Nawatny in 1878. The following photo from circa 1948 shows the area,
with the area that today constitutes 820, 836, and 844 Main outlined in red.
Although there are just three addresses, they represent six historic structures plus
additional outbuildings. The Henning Mortuary building, the Mossoni House, the
residence behind the Mossoni House, and the structures that comprise the Marketplace
Building are all older than the buildings next to them on the south side of that block due
to there having been a fire that destroyed the buildings on the south side of the block in
1926 (covering 2 % lots out of the 6). For purposes of this report, the buildings will be
1
