IECityo
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
631 Johnson St., Louisville, Colorado (report updated 7-11-2012 & 11-8-2013)
Year of Construction: 1945 (see discussion)
Summary: This house was associated with members of the Walters family of Louisville from
1945 to 1975, a period of thirty years (and they owned the property for over fifty years).
Location of 631 Johnson and Date of Construction
This particular property was not part of a historical annexation to Louisville. It is situated just
west of Johnson's 15t Addition that was platted in 1890 by M.V. Johnson. It is also very close to
the Kimberly Addition, which was platted in 1911.
The online County records give 1945 as the year of construction for this property. The County
records have often been found to be in error with respect to the dates of construction for
Louisville structures, and sometimes give the date of a remodel to be the date of the original
construction, and it is important to examine all of the historical evidence to ascertain the date
of construction. The fact that this house was not historically within the Louisville town limits has
made it particularly difficult to ascertain when it was built.
The 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville does not show this structure, although it shows other
buildings that were outside of the subdivisions that were part of Louisville. This would suggest
that the house at 631 Johnson was constructed after 1909.
An attempt was made to find a County Assessor card with a photo that should have been
completed for 631 Johnson. Such a card could shed light on the date of construction and show
the house as it looked several decades ago. Not surprisingly, such a card was not found with the
cards for the properties located within the town limits of Louisville that were surveyed in 1948.
However, unfortunately, a card for this property also could not be found with the cards for
unincorporated Boulder County.
Update: In this case, a Louisville resident who lives close to 631 Johnson (and who knew the
Walters family) has been able to confirm to the current owners of 631 Johnson that the house
was constructed in 1945.
