Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
March 2014
If city
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 187
729 Johnson History Outline
Legal Description: LOTS 11 & 12 & WLY 4 FT of SLY 65 FT of LOT 13, BLK 5, JOHNSON'S FIRST
ADDITION, Louisville, Colorado
Year of Construction: circa 1896
Summary: This house was built in about 1896 by George and Margaret Cunning. The Cunning
family was associated with the house until 1968, a period of about 72 years.
Development of the Johnson's First Addition
Johnson's 1st Addition was platted in 1890 by Mahlon V. Johnson. It was only the second
residential subdivision to be platted, after the Jefferson Place Addition was platted in 1880. (It
consists of two separate sections that do not border one another, though both abut Roosevelt.)
Mahlon V. Johnson was a Denver -based coal mine operator who started the Ajax Coal Mining
Co. in 1889 and served as its president. According to 1889 articles in Denver newspapers, the
original intent was to establish a new town by Louisville to be called "Ajaxville" with proximity
to the new Ajax Mine. However, instead, Johnson platted this subdivision that became part of
the town of Louisville.
Cunning Ownership of Property beginning in 1892 and going to 1968; Discussion of Date of
Construction
• This property consists of Lots 11 and 12, and part of Lot 13.
• The 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville shows that the house was on Lot 12.
• George Cunning purchased Lot 12 from the Ajax Coal Mining Co. in 1895.
• His mother, Catherine Cunning, had purchased Lot 13 in 1892 from the developer of the
Johnson's First Addition, Mahlon V. Johnson.
• George Cunning purchased Lot 11 from the Rocky Mountain Fuel Co. in 1919 (or at least
that was the year that the deed was recorded).
