Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Library & Museum Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
August 2015
Ex
City r
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
636 McKinley Ave. History
Legal Description: Lots 19-20, Block 11, Louisville Heights subdivision
Year of Construction: circa 1908
Summary: This home was associated with the Evans/Williams family for 95 years. Johnny "Shadow"
Williams is remembered as having done a lot of work on the house.
Pine Street ended right by the house for a period of several decades, and the house likely felt to many
like it was tucked away in a very remote corner of Louisville, with open space around it.
Development of the Louisville Heights Subdivision; early history; date of construction
The Louisville Heights Addition in which this house sits was platted in 1904 by the Colorado Mortgage
and Investment Co. Ltd.
Both the Boulder County website and the 1948 Boulder County Assessor Card for this property give 1908
as the date of construction. Since Boulder County records are sometimes in error with respect to the
construction dates of historic buildings in Louisville, other evidence must also be looked to. In this case,
the 1909 Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville does confirm that the house was built by 1909, so the
presumed date of construction is "circa 1908." The following image shows the presence of 636 McKinley
on the 1909 map (the black square closest to the center of the image), with few houses near it. In fact, it
was the on the very southwest edge of town, and it would be on the edge of the town for several
decades.
