Community Update Spring 2008 A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: CONTEMPLATIVE TIMES Exciting events are in store for us, not only in Louisville, but in our nation. We have a presidential election that will be historic in terms of our candidates. Moreover, we are experiencing a riveting and seemingly exhausting process to select both the Republican elections, and certainly the events leading up to the elec- tions of2008, promise to be spirited and very diverse, not only on national issues, but on state issues as well. I am particularly excited to have the Democratic National Convention in Denver late affiliation or lack thereof, it allows those of us in the State of Colorado to experience first hand the finalization of the selection of one of the presidential candidates and her/his running mate. You may question the impact on Louisville. I would suggest that a number of delegates, alternates, media personnel, et al will find their way to Louisville to spend money and time. Our reputation of friendliness as a City will be on display for our many guests from all over the United States. I ask the various organizations in the City to take the lead in making our visitors feel welcome, including the Louisville Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association, and certainly, the City of Louisville through our Business Retention and Development Committee (BRaD). We will have a captive audience and this will be an opportunity to share the virtues of Louisville with our visitors. While we are experiencing the notoriety of the national convention, there are some affiliation. Our transportation system in the State of Colorado is in serious need of repair and maintenance. Our education system from pre-kindergarten to college/university is seriously underfunded and when compared with other nations, fares very poorly. Our health system needs signifi- cant revitalization and reevaluation. Do these issues impact Louisville? Absolutely, and to that end it is incumbent on our City to be involved in solutions. I have always believed in a consortium approach and with funding deficiencies, it becomes even more imperative to seek regional solutions. means looking at some intriguing and potentially controversial alternatives in our quest for answers. We, as a City, have to continue to seek regional and collaborative agree- ments to achieve and maintain our quality of life. As a City that relies on sales taxes, we need other financial alternatives to augment our dependence on sales tax. To that end, I challenge our citizens to assist your City Council and your Mayor to address these foresee- able issues.
