FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH
NOVEMBER 2001
Whereas, one in four American adults is a family caregiver caring for loved ones who are
chronically ill or disabled; and
Whereas, eighty percent of all the home care in this country is provided by family caregivers;
and
Whereas, one of the strengths of caregivers is their ability to manage multiple duties and
responsibilities, with half of all caregivers working outside their homes full or part-
time; and
Whereas, over half of family caregivers are in their key wage-earning years, between 35 and 64
years old, therefore experiencing a huge toll on their financial well-being and earning
potential; and
Whereas, family caregivers make a significant contribution to our communities and are critical
to sustaining our healthcare system; and
Whereas, more and more family caregivers are involved in performing some type of nursing
activity such as managing medications,changing dressings, or monitoring vital signs;
and
Whereas, the economic value of family caregiving is conservatively estimated to be $194
billion, more than the total expenditures for all paid home health care and the entire
nursing home industry combined; and
Whereas, in spite of their valuable contribution,family caregivers are often isolated, invisible,
and their services disregarded.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that I,Tom Davidson,Mayor of the City of Louisville,
Colorado, do hereby proclaim November 2001 as Family Caregivers Month in the City of
Louisville and urge all citizens to Share the Caring by acknowledging the strengths of family
caregivers and by reaching out and sharing the care.
DATED this 6th day of November, 2001
;
Ir % •; ,f Tom Davidson,Mayor
ATTEST: tt` cc... . ••r
>> L✓`
ncy arra ity er
