This location was the original site for the St. Louis Catholic Church and later for the <br />United Pentecostal Church of Louisville. Most notable is the construction of the Pentecostal (Apostolic) <br />Church which was built completely by members of the Parish over several years. This history also reflects <br />how churches collaborated with each other and contributed to the welfare of the community. <br />Development of the Jefferson Place Subdivision <br />The Jefferson Place subdivision was the first residential area created outside, and immediately west of <br />the original town. Charles Welch, the founder of the Welch Mine, platted the subdivision to create a <br />residential area for mine workers and people in supporting lines of business in 1880. The 20-acre <br />subdivision consists of 170 lots, bordered by La Farge and Jefferson Avenues, with Pine, Spruce, and <br />Walnut as cross -streets. <br />Early History <br />Much of the early history of this property comes from a report written by Bridget Bacon in 2011 which is <br />included here and updated by Gigi Yang. The current property at 833 La Farge was built for the Apostolic <br />Church between 1947-1949. However, the site was the original home of the St. Louis Catholic Church <br />between 1884-1944. <br />Report from Bridget Bacon <br />This building was constructed to be, and was used as, a church.
