A Message from the Mayor: Let the Good Times Roll As I prepared to write my last column (I can hear the audible cheers!!), I was trying to think of a song title that encapsulated my tenure as your Mayor for the last eight years and previous to that, as a council member for twelve years. I was struck by the Grateful Dead's rendition of an old Sam Cooke song titled "LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL." In many ways, I have been so blessed and fortunate to have found my home in Louisville and have been honored and humbled by my many experiences in serving our wonderful community. Allow me to share with you my first impressions of Louisville and how I must have been destined to be a small part of a great city As I was living in Las Animas, Colorado, one of my high school football coaches was this tremendous human being named Jack LaSalle. Being an impressionable young man, I listened to my coaches in a very obedi- ent fashion. (I know many of you are wondering what happened to that trait!). Coach LaSalle spoke of Louisville as a community that had the toughness and grittiness to excel not only in football, but in character. He led by example and wasn't boastful, but was clearly proud of his "hometown." It was several years later that I had the opportunity to make a decision to continue to live in Boulder County In 1984, my heart and mind were clear that Louisville was my choice without question. It became home for my wife Terre and our children, Michael, Brian, and Jennie, all of whom attended Louisville Middle School. Clearly my serendipitous path was paved by the late Jack LaSalle as I immediately met friends and family who referred to Coach LaSalle in an affectionate manner as the "Bum. From the day we built and moved into our home in Mesa Point, Louisville was "HOME." We were greeted not as strangers, but with open arms to a community that had both a keen sense of history and was very progressive. For me, I was very satisfied to be a resident of our community and not be involved politically, but that changed one evening in 1991 when Council members Tom Davidson and Margaret Hornbostel came to our home for a visit. After their persuasion, I decided to run for a seat on the City Council in Ward 1. I was fortunate enough to be elected and as the saying goes, "the rest is history." I realized over time how much Louisville meant to me. It is with pleasure and pride that I live here. I know that resonates not only with me, but also with many of you. Yes, we have had some rapids to ride and yes, we have endured some tumultuous times, but Louisville has always self - corrected when we headed towards one extreme or the other. Louisville has not rewarded folks that have misrepresented themselves or tried to take advantage of loopholes as they are exposed too easily. Louisville continues to espouse the attributes of my old football coach. It has been a pleasure to be associated with so many fine people, many of whom are lasting and treasured friends. These include Tom Davidson, mayor under whom I served, as well as the City Managers including Annette Brand, Bill Simmons, Heather Balser, and presently Malcolm Fleming. All of whom have contributed mightily to the City of Louisville and to what small success I have enjoyed.
