Minutes
LCC New Arts Center Steering Committee
October 8, 2007
The only SC members present were Gina Varra and Don Atwood. In addition
Mike Haas, the Technical Director for both Coal Creek Community Theatre and
the Aurora Fox Theatre participated as an expert. Given attendance this meeting
could not be considered as an official SC meeting. Instead Mike, Gina, and Don
attempted to define what would be the best we could envisage in a new arts
center for Louisville. The following descriptions resulted from that effort.
Extent and size of the arts center;
- One 500 seat theatre
- One studio/theatre with collapsible risers to seat between 100 and 150 -
this studio would be used for rehearsals, classes, and as a smaller theatre
- Another flexible teaching space for all genres of art, that can also be used
as warm up room for performers
- One clearly defined exhibit space
- Dressing rooms for men and women with video feeds from all
performances in progress
- A green room adjacent to both performance spaces, which has video
feeds of all performances in progress
- A spacious lobby, in which audiences can gather pre-show and at
intermissions, and in which receptions can be held
- A separate box-office
- A snack bar as part of the lobby
- Offices for an Executive Director as well as separate office space for five
staff members (Technical Director, Box Office Manager, Facilities
Manager, Art Curator, and one secretary)
- Storage space for spare lights (so they can be stored hanging), tools,
props (for current productions only), chairs and racks for musical concerts,
etc.
- A small gift shop that would market work by local artists.
Some descriptions of spaces defined above:
500-seat theatre
- Seating arranged as in a proscenium theatre carefully designed to
maintain good sight lines throughout. Seating should be on levels that can
include orchestra and at least one balcony
