Louisville Cultural Council <br />New Arts Center Steering Committee <br />Minutes <br />APRIL 14, 2008 <br />In attendance: Don Atwood, Lynn Fleming, Lynn Wooten, Keith Bobo <br />(provisional member) <br />Absent: Gina Varra (Mike Haas, tech. advisor) <br />- CALL TO ORDER <br />Don called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and introduced the committee <br />members <br />2 -APPROVAL OF AGENDA <br />Lynn W. moved to accept; Lynn F. seconded, and the agenda was accepted. <br />3 -APPROVAL OF MINUTES FOR AUGUST 13, 2007 (Compiled by Don Atwood) <br />Lynn F. moved, Lynn W. seconded, and the minutes were approved. <br />4 -PUBLIC COMMENTS ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA <br />None. Instead, the new members requested background on the committee, its <br />purpose, and its past actions. <br />• Don explained the City's position re: the committee and its plans. <br />• Don provided information on the East County Arts Alliance and the Arts <br />Village study. <br />• Don explained the result of the committee's efforts to negotiate for the <br />"grain elevator" as an arts space. <br />5 -DISCUSSION OF FACILITY DESCRIPTION DEVELOPED ON OCTOBER 8, <br />2007 <br />Don provided a description of the proposed space for a cultural center that he <br />and Mike Haas drafted in October, 2007. The concept was based in large part <br />on the Lakewood Cultural Center. It was apparent that the ideas drafted <br />pertained largely to performing arts, and Lynn W. offered to provide more insight <br />into what should be included for visual arts. Keith Bobo also offered to expand <br />the draft description to include accouterments and constructions required for <br />music presentations. Keith also suggested a bigger stage and deeper wings. <br />Questions arose re: where the money might come from. Don says the space <br />needs a great E.D. and staff that can bring money in. The big venues in the area <br />depend on big shows from the outside to pay the bills, pushing the locals out. <br />Don wants to keep a new arts center available to local artists. Keith says that <br />we'd need City support to do that, and Don indicated that we really couldn't <br />expect such support. He noted that to benefit downtown, the arts center would <br />
