She
inquired whether the Resource Advisory Board made a recommendation.
Recreation and Senior Services Director Keith Williams explained the Recreation
Department did an extensive analysis in the late 1990's on the maintenance and
upkeep of the Memory Square Swimming Pool facility. Through the annual
capital improvement budget the maintenance of Memory Square Pool has been
scheduled. This year the 17-year old boiler was scheduled for replacement. He
explained the National Pool & Spa Foundation recommends pool boilers for
outdoor pool in this part of the country. He noted solar panels for outdoor
swimming pools are not cost effective. The 2006 budget for the boiler
replacement is $17,000, however through the bidding process the boiler will cost
$10,000. He explained new technology has made a Teledyne thermal unit,
which is 80% more energy efficient.
City Manager Simmons asked if the Resource Advisory Board looked at the
bidding process for the Memory Square Pool boiler. Deputy City Manager Boyd
stated the Resource Advisory Board has not looked at such issues specifically.
Council member Marsella inquired whether the cost of the new boiler is expected
to reduce the heating bill. Williams anticipated it to be more energy efficient.
MOTION: Council member Yarnell moved to award the Contract to Patio Pools
for Memory Square Swimming Pool Boiler Replacement, seconded by Council
member Clabots. Roll call vote was taken. The motion carried by a vote of 7-0.
