Sustainable Holiday Ideas <br />There are many ways to keep sustainability in mind this <br />holiday season. Here are a few things to consider when <br />giving gifts: <br />• Support local business by purchasing gift cards, <br />buying local and ordering food to go. <br />• Give something edible. Make a dessert ora healthy <br />snack packaged in reusable mason jars. <br />• Give products that will help friends and family go <br />green, such as reusable mugs, water bottles, bags <br />or lunch containers. <br />• Give something edible. Make a dessert ora healthy <br />snack packaged in reusable mason jars. <br />Gift Wrapping: Reuse newspapers, maps, posters, <br />fabric, calendars, and cloth bags to wrap tape -free gifts. <br />Twine and plant clippings can be used for decorating <br />and closing packages. Shop locally, including thrift, <br />consignment, and second-hand stores. For shipping, <br />replace foam or bubble wrap with balled -up newspaper <br />or magazine pages. <br />Have a safe and sustainable holiday season this year. <br />Monthly Sustainability Spotlight <br />The City has begun publishing a Sustainability Spotlight <br />in the Monthly Community Update e-newsletter that <br />highlights a different sustainability topic each month. To <br />subscribe, visit LouisvilleCO.gov and look for the "Get <br />Notified" button. <br />Curbside Composting: We Need Your Help! <br />Organic materials collected through compost programs <br />are mixed with yard waste and processed to become <br />compost, a nutrient -rich soil amendment. Compost is <br />sold for use in landscaping, road construction, garden <br />projects, and many other soil restoration projects. <br />In order for organics recycling programs to be <br />sustainable, the compost manufacturers that turn <br />organics into compost must receive organics without <br />contamination and/or non-compostable materials. <br />The City's compost partner, Al Organics, has begun <br />rejecting loads of compost if they contain plastics or <br />other non-compostable contaminants. Take a look at <br />the insert included in this newsletter for your curbside <br />composting guidelines to avoid your curbside compost <br />being landfilled. <br />No Changes to Louisville Disposable Bag Tax in 2023 <br />Did you know the average Louisville resident can save <br />over $50 per year by bringing their own bags to the <br />store? In January 2023, a disposable bag fee will go <br />into effect statewide, but this change will not affect the <br />Louisville bag tax approved by voters in 2020. Louisville <br />retailers will continue to collect 25ct for each paper and <br />plastic disposable bag used. Help reduce the use of <br />disposable bags by bringing your own reusable bag.
