U
NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM
Did you know that Louisville participates in the National
Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)? The NFIP makes
federally backed flood insurance available for all
buildings, whether they are in a designated floodplain
or not. Louisville's participation also provides residents a
discount on flood insurance premiums. Flood insurance
covers direct losses caused by surface flooding, due to
either a creek overflowing its banks or a local drainage
event. Regular homeowner's insurance does not cover
damage caused by floods.
The City recognizes that floodplains have natural
and beneficial functions if they are preserved and
maintained properly. Keeping floodplains open and
natural minimizes flood damage by allowing water
to spread over a larger area. In some instances,
construction in the floodplain cannot be avoided, and
the City has a permitting process to address these
situations. Any construction on a property in a floodplain
must have a floodplain development permit, including
minor residential improvements such as a deck. If the
improvements you make to your home or commercial
building exceed more than 50% of the value of the
building, it must be elevated above the base flood
elevation as part of the construction.
Safety should be the first priority during a flood. Did you
know that six inches of moving water can knock you off
your feet? Never walk through flowing water or walk
through standing water unless you are certain of the
depth of the water. Do not drive through flooded areas;
more flood victims drown in their cars than anywhere
else. If your home has been flooded, shut of the gas
and electricity if you are able.
Homeowners, realtors, lenders, and insurance agents
can obtain current and historical flood information
for properties within the City by visiting City Hall or
contacting the Planning Division at 303-335-4592 or
Planning©LouisvilleCO.gov. This includes copies of
floodplain maps and Elevation Certificates, information
on past flood events, information on if a property is
located in a floodplain, and floodplain protection advice.
The City also offers site visits to anyone who would like
to obtain advice from City staff on floodplain issues
related to their property.
Additional information on the NFIP and flood insurance
requirements can be obtained from FloodSmart.gov
and FEMA.gov/NFIP.
LCityof
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE
1878
749 Main Street info@LouisvilleCO.gov
Louisville, CO 80027
Emergency
LouisvilleCO.gov
911
Non -Emergency Dispatch 303.441.4444
City Hall 303.666.6565
Building Safety Division 303.335.4584
Business Licensing & Sales Tax 303.335.4514
City Manager's Office 303.335.4533
Arts & Events 303.335.4581
Economic Vitality 303.335.4531
Finance Department 303.335.4500
Human Resources 303.335.4722
Parks & Recreation 303.335.4735
Planning Department 303.335.4592
Public Works & Utilities 303.335.4608
Water Meters & Sewers 303.335.4750
Snow Plowing & Streets 303.335.4750
Utility Billing 303.335.4501
Coal Creek Golf Course 303.666.7888
Historical Museum 303.335.4850
Library 303.335.4849
Memory Square Pool 303.666.7909
Municipal Court 303.335.4653
Police Department 303.666.6531
Recreation & Senior Center 303.666.7400
VIA APPIA SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS
Via Appia Pop -Up Meetings
Thursday, March 7 • 8-9:30 a.m. and 4-5:30 p.m.
Meet on Via Appia and Church Lane
Via Appia Community Meeting
Monday, March 11 • 5:30-7 p.m.
Louisville Recreation & Senior Center
900 W Via Appia Way
Spring 2024 • Page 3
