Joseph H. and Elizabeth Fearn Ownership, 1905-1910
Joseph and Elizbeth Fearn purchased the property from Frank Boyd in 1905 for $1200. The Fearns came
to Louisville from Illinois and had been living in Louisville since 1895. They had two children — Ernest
(b.1896) and Lela (b.1900). Joseph Fearn is listed as a coal miner in the 1900 and 1910 census and ran for
Trustee of Louisville on the socialist ticket in 1910. The photo below is dated c. early 1900s and is most
likely of the Fearn family outside 1016 Main.
11 l 111 11llllllllillull(illlllllllll lii Taii,tf1;1 11
11 c III"
Dates of Construction
It is possible a house was constructed on the lot while the property was owned by McAllister Lumber or
Frank Boyd, however the year of construction cannot be accurately determined. Boulder County's online
records give 1910 as the house's date of construction. However, the County has sometimes been found
to be in error with respect to the date of construction of houses in the area, so other evidence is looked
to. In this case, the date offered by the County contradicts the information, including information on the
County Assessor card itself, which notes the house was 55 years old in 1950. This would place the
earliest date of construction at 1895, around the time that McAllister Lumber acquired the property.
Later reports and newspaper articles related to the listing of 1016 Main on the National Register of
Historic Places, notes the date of construction as 1892 (Louisville Times, October 1, 1986) and as built by
John L. Ashe in 1910 (Louisville Times, November 9, 1986).
