C RI:Lk GHLI Crx_l;si I'rt:r.rnlrvJR/ Lr,.1l1, Ri ycry lfL l li I'1_n Sr1 i
(SAND BUNKERS D
S and bunkers are one of the most important elements on a golf course. As a flanking
bunker, they can visually and strategically frame a green or fairway. As a target or cross
bunker, they can act as an aiming point to aid in alignment. Near water or out -of- bounds,
they can act as a savior bunker to protect the golfer from being unfairly penalized.
Bunkers are also often times one of the highest maintenance issues on a golf course.
Over the years, the bunkers at Coal Creek have been edged so that the bunkers are now
considerably larger than the original bunkers and the "capes" or faces now have nearly
vertical slopes on which it is difficult to maintain sand. As the faces get edged and the
native soils erode into the bunker, the sand becomes contaminated so that it is no longer
able to drain properly. Earlier this year, the sand in the bunkers was replaced with new
sand. However, this is only a short -term, temporary fix since the faces are still eroding.
Bevil. hunker i/iie,// /0 10/0/0111 nu /rule 2.
C rllup.iu h111/el /urr <.F runlu
It is our recommendation that a complete renovation of the bunkers be undertaken to 1.)
eliminate obsolete or out -of -play bunkers, 2.) reduce overall maintenance and repair by
eliminating erosion and wash outs, 3.) improve playability and visual interest, 4.) define the
individual holes strategically and 5.) restore the original design integrity. As indicated on
the master plan, some bunkers will be removed or relocated, some will be reconstructed
and some new bunkers will likely be added. By redesigning and reconstructing the existing
bunkers and selectively adding new bunkers, it is our belief that Coal Creek Golf Course
will provide a more enjoyable golfing experience for golfers of all ages and abilities while,
at the same time, minimizing the time and expense of repairing and maintaining the golf
course.
1/rxr-ruirNrurir/ Gou Cot l,si Ali /ruins I'.i 7 Ocroi//li 17, 2011
