Louisville Historic Preservation Commission
(date)
(owner’s name and address)
Dear Historic Old Town Louisville commercial property owner:
In November 2008, Louisville voters took the unprecedented step of approving a 1/8% sales tax
for the preservation of historic properties and the character of Historic Old Town Louisville.
These tax monies have been placed in a Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), which in large part
provides voluntary incentives to property owners to preserve and rehabilitate their historic
properties.
In April 2010, the Louisville City Council approved additional incentives from the HPF. Owners
who landmark their historic properties now receive a $1000 bonus, plus eligibility for an up to
$5000 grant within one year for the preservation, restoration or rehabilitation of their property,
including routine maintenance. This is in addition to the other grants and incentives available
from the HPF. Several homeowners have taken advantage of these incentives in the past several
months.
Recognizing that the citizens of Louisville place a high value on the preservation of historic
commercial structures , the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is developing
recommendations for a commercial incentives package to be forwarded to City Council. At this
point, our preliminary recommendations are in the attached document. However, we are seeking
input from property owners as to whether these incentives are effective, or whether additional or
different incentives would be more meaningful.
If you so desire, please provide your input in one of the following methods:
1) You can email our staff contact, Sean McCartney, Principal Planner, at
seanm@louisvilleco.gov.
2) You may attend one of our public meetings and make comments during the “public
comments” section of the agenda. Our meetings usually take place at 7 p.m. in City Council
rd
Chambers, on the 3 Monday of each month.
3) We plan to visit other municipal and non-municipal bodies in the near future to present our
preliminary recommendations and take suggestions. These meetings are as follows:
Louisville Sustainability and Advisory Board (time and place)
Louisville Business Retention and Development Committee (time and place)
Louisville Chamber of Commerce (time and place)
Louisville Downtown Business Association (time and place)
Please feel free to take one or more of these opportunities to contact us. Thank you for your
interest in the preservation of the character of Louisville.
