COUNCIL COMMUNICATION <br />TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL <br />FROM: MALCOLM FLEMING <br /> CITY MANAGER <br />DATE: MAY 15, 2012 <br />SUBJECT: SALES TAX REPORTS FOR THE MONTH ENDED MARCH 31, 2012 <br />ORIGINATING <br />DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE <br />SUMMARY: <br />Attached are the monthly revenue reports for sales tax, lodging tax, auto use tax, <br />consumer use tax and building use tax for the month ending March 31, 2011. Also <br />included are monthly and quarterly reports on sales tax revenue by area and by <br />industry, the revenue by area graphs for restaurants, and the quarterly historical <br />revenue. <br />The total for all revenues ended March 2012 up 15.3% YTD over 2011. <br />The month of March 2012 was strong with sales tax revenue up 5.2% over that of March <br />stst <br />2011. YTD revenue for 1 quarter ended 7.5% above 1 quarter 2011 and is currently <br />5.3% above budget. <br />Sales tax revenue for the top 50 vendors decreased 2.5% for the month of March 2012, <br />and is currently 1.4% above 2011 YTD. Gains were seen in the following sectors; <br />Grocery (7.1%), Hotels (16.9%), Home Improvement (17.4%) and Restaurants (7.4%). The <br />declining sectors were; General Merchandise (-3.5%), Technology (-73%) and <br />Telecom/Utilities (-10.4%). <br />Lodging tax revenue for March 2012 increased 19.8% over March 2011 with YTD <br />revenues 16.4% above 2011 and 4.5% above budget. <br />Auto use tax revenue for March 2012 increased 3.5% over March 2011 with YTD <br />revenues 16.7% above 2011 and 2.1% above budget. <br />Building use tax revenue for March 2012 increased 585% from March 2011 with YTD <br />revenues 106% above 2011 and 48.4% above budget. <br />SUBJECT AGENDA ITEM <br />March 2012 Sales Tax Report <br />5 <br />
