City Council <br />Study Session Summary <br />April 10, 2012 <br />Page 2 of 7 <br />Call to Order— The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Mayor Muckle. <br />Update /Discussion — Youth Advisory Board <br />Youth Advisory Board members presented on the activities of the group for the <br />2011 -2012 school year. Some of the highlights of the year: <br />• September — Mayor Chuck Sisk and Economic Development Director, <br />Bonnie Star attended the Board's training day. Mayor Sisk gave the <br />opening welcome /introduction that included a history and origin of the <br />Board, talked about youth being leaders in the community and engaging <br />other youth to get involved. Director Star thanked the Board for their <br />willingness to serve the community and described her position with the <br />City with the two major functions of business recruitment and business <br />retention. <br />• October — Members volunteered at the YMCA Halloween event and <br />attended other City board meetings. <br />• November — Decision made to move forward with the Dear Louisville <br />book as the main project for the term. The book is a snapshot of Louisville <br />youth. The Board also participated in Community Food Share and <br />collected lots of food for the community. <br />• December — Marched in the Parade of Lights to promote the YAB and <br />promoted the Dear Louisville book. Helped with the recreation center's <br />Dessert and Story Time with Santa. <br />• January — Signed up for Daffodil Days benefitting the American Cancer <br />Society. Work continued on collecting submissions for the Dear Louisville <br />book. <br />• February — Planning for the printing and publicity for the Dear Louisville <br />book, helped with Royal Ball held at the Louisville Arts Center. Sold <br />daffodils and held bake sale at Medtronic to benefit cancer research. <br />• March — Planner, Scott Robinson, attended the March board meeting and <br />spoke about the process for updating the Comprehensive Plan. Board <br />was invited to attend future Planning Commission and Council meetings to <br />get more involved and participate in the Comp Plan update process. <br />Members volunteered at the St. Patrick's Day dinner at the Senior Center. <br />• April — publish and begin selling the Dear Louisville books. Plan is to <br />promote book at the Street Faire. Members participating in a county -wide <br />focus group on teens. <br />Future Goals — <br />• Promote public awareness of YAB <br />• Continue to provide volunteer opportunities for youth <br />• Encourage youth to voice opinions with the City of Louisville <br />• Continue to network with other City boards and commissions <br />• Recruit a diverse group of new members for the next school year <br />• Continue working on the Dear Louisville book <br />
