City Council Study Session Summary April 10, 2012 Page 2 of 7 Call to Order— The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Mayor Muckle. Update /Discussion — Youth Advisory Board Youth Advisory Board members presented on the activities of the group for the 2011 -2012 school year. Some of the highlights of the year: • September — Mayor Chuck Sisk and Economic Development Director, Bonnie Star attended the Board's training day. Mayor Sisk gave the opening welcome /introduction that included a history and origin of the Board, talked about youth being leaders in the community and engaging other youth to get involved. Director Star thanked the Board for their willingness to serve the community and described her position with the City with the two major functions of business recruitment and business retention. • October — Members volunteered at the YMCA Halloween event and attended other City board meetings. • November — Decision made to move forward with the Dear Louisville book as the main project for the term. The book is a snapshot of Louisville youth. The Board also participated in Community Food Share and collected lots of food for the community. • December — Marched in the Parade of Lights to promote the YAB and promoted the Dear Louisville book. Helped with the recreation center's Dessert and Story Time with Santa. • January — Signed up for Daffodil Days benefitting the American Cancer Society. Work continued on collecting submissions for the Dear Louisville book. • February — Planning for the printing and publicity for the Dear Louisville book, helped with Royal Ball held at the Louisville Arts Center. Sold daffodils and held bake sale at Medtronic to benefit cancer research. • March — Planner, Scott Robinson, attended the March board meeting and spoke about the process for updating the Comprehensive Plan. Board was invited to attend future Planning Commission and Council meetings to get more involved and participate in the Comp Plan update process. Members volunteered at the St. Patrick's Day dinner at the Senior Center. • April — publish and begin selling the Dear Louisville books. Plan is to promote book at the Street Faire. Members participating in a county -wide focus group on teens. Future Goals — • Promote public awareness of YAB • Continue to provide volunteer opportunities for youth • Encourage youth to voice opinions with the City of Louisville • Continue to network with other City boards and commissions • Recruit a diverse group of new members for the next school year • Continue working on the Dear Louisville book
