The 42 Gateway <br />Downtown Connection - Design Objectives <br />Limit the "canyon" effect by stepping back retaining walls to <br />widen the bowl and provide the greatest amount of openness <br />and visibility. <br />Remove places of limited visibility by rounding the horizontal <br />plane, it creates a safer environment and eliminates corners <br />for litter to accumulate in. <br />f <br />- <br />Maintain sightlines through the underpass to allow more <br />natural light in and provide good visibility. <br />Provide enough plaza or entry room to create a sense of place. <br />Generally 25'from the underpass mouth is sufficient to both <br />limit congestion and feel comfortable. <br />Create an inviting and smooth experience by breaking down <br />the stairs into a series of smaller segments and more subtle <br />transitions. <br />Integrate ADA access into the design concept, not merely at- <br />taching scissor ramps of to the periphery and when possible <br />use universally accessible sidewalk (5% slope) rather than the <br />ramps (8.3% slope) with landings. <br />LCityof <br />Louisville <br />
