Horticultural & Forestry Advisory Board
Minutes
November 3, 2005
Chris is planning a tree planting at the Arboretum, and has invited Kaleena
Kreager, a teacher who will bring a group of elementary students to the tree
planting. Theresa suggested that Chris invite a group of senior citizens to a tree
planting, in order to raise awareness of the Arboretum. Trees from the former
library parking lot will be transplanted if possible. Jeff offered to help Chris prune
trees at the Arboretum. Theresa said students at St. Louis School are interested
in doing community service projects. For additional volunteers for various
Arboretum projects, Dave suggested contacting Selena Jaramillo, Volunteer
Coordinator at the Louisville Rec Center.
Regarding fundraising for the Arboretum, it was agreed that HFAB as a group
should be involved, rather than asking one or two members to assume primary
responsibility. Mike is still planning to have a lunch meeting with Elle Cabbage to
discuss fundraising ideas. Discussion of the Louisville Historical Museum's
fundraising project, which involved "selling" planting beds to various individuals
and groups, with a plaque to be placed in the bed to honor the donors. It was
suggested that HFAB should purchase one of the beds, as the Board was
involved in the planning of the garden. Mike offered to check on availability of a
bed for purchase.
VII. Community Park Dedication /Arbor Day Celebration— Review
• All members who attended the April 29 event commented that it was very well
attended, especially by dogs; that everyone enjoyed the presentations; and that
the park in general is in very good condition. It was suggested that HFAB
continue to use city events such as this as a way to raise awareness of the
Arboretum and other HFAB projects.
•
VIII. Community Park Update
Boxwoods which are struggling will not be removed yet, as there is still a
possibility they may recover. Discussion of the use and alteration (by users) of
the bike track area — maintenance is a concern because of safety and liability
issues. Jeff is concerned about bamboo planted near pond being invasive. Per
Chris, Urban Farmer will replace 17 dead trees, and some sod may have to be
replaced later. Urban Farmer's park maintenance contract will continue for a
year.
IX. Plant Management Guidelines for Community Park
Per Theresa and Lise, the guidelines are almost complete except for a few
photos to be corrected. The guidelines, which contain a listing, location, and
photo for identification of all non -woody plant material in the park, will be made
available to the new City Horticulturist, Tom Coates and staff.
X. Residential Landscape Design Guidelines
It was suggested that the Board research what other cities have done in this
area. Discussion of whether guidelines or an ordinance would be more
