•
Horticultural & Forestry Advisory Board
Minutes
November 3, 2005
The minutes from the regular meeting held on November 3, 2005 were approved
as written, with the exception of one amendment submitted by Caryl Shields:
Item VII, Arboretum Planning, last paragraph now reads, "Caryl has observed
children playing in the xeric garden. She expressed concern about the prairie
dogs in the field west of the Arboretum, SE of the police station. In the past,
prairie dogs ate irrigation lines and dug holes in the Arboretum."
Motion to accept: M. Frontczak, Second: M. Tepe.
V. Public Comments on Items Not on the Agenda
As a member of the public, Theresa Rounds responded to Caryl's concerns
about the Arboretum, stating that everything seems to be in good condition as of
the end of November. Discussion followed about the feasibility of-limiting access
to the Arboretum, especially by children using the adjacent skate park. Dave
Clabots stated that it is not possible to post a police officer in the area due to
budget constraints. In general, skate park users have been well- behaved and
respectful of facility and surrounding area.
VI. Community Park
Theresa Rounds has been in contact with Kathy Kron, who reports that the park
will be turned over to the city within a few days. Turf survival is a big concern, as
some areas were installed too late to irrigate properly. Kathy will be at a meeting
tomorrow which will address the issue of keeping the public off the turf until it
becomes established next summer. On behalf of HFAB, Mike Frontczak will call
Kathy tomorrow morning to suggest one more thorough watering of the turf
before the park is turned over from the contractor to the city. The fountain will be
finished this winter. Some trees have died, but are under warranty and will be
replaced. Caryl Shields expressed concern about the trail connection at the
south end of the park.
Question was raised about hiring a replacement for Cindy Lair's position in Land
Management, and Dave Clabots reported that one candidate has declined an
offer. Discussion of HFAB's role in relation to maintenance of parks and open
space.
VII. Arboretum Planning
Susan Spaulding's presentation to City Council has not yet been placed on the
agenda. She will contact Chris Lichty to request a time on either Dec. 20 or
Jan. 3.
Theresa, Matt and Chris have been working on the CTC grant, which must be
submitted by Dec. 9. They have completed all of the grant questions, and are
• working on a list of tree species which would be purchased. Teachers at Boulder
Tech and Coal Creek Elementary have expressed an interest in helping to plant
