C. New Business
• Review of 75% plan for the Louisville Community Park
1. Too many cottonwoods in the wrong places. These are very messy trees — should not
be near people, sidewalks or street. Short- lived, subject to storm breakage and are
short lived. There are currently 28 planned — this is a lot of cottonwoods. English
and Shumard Oaks are great replacements for large shade tree requirements.
2. 29 ash spec'd when the board and city arborist has requested 0 to few ashes to be
planted in the city - -- too many ash in the city and the ash borer has come to roost.
Autumn Purple Ash survived the drought well but with its smooth bark, it is less
susceptible to the ash borer. The board does like the Autumn Purple Ash and their
locations.
3. Suggested having drip for trees in turf on separate drip zone as they get too much
water as turf is being established, then only shallow water in subsequent years. Chris
to review irrigation possibilities with Kathy.
4. Move bur oaks from traffic islands as the large nuts will be dropping on cars and
street, be run over by cars and leave a mess on the road. Trees on island are a good
thing in that the islands have a large diameter, just plant a fruitless, nutless trees.
Honeylocusts are just fine for that environment. Avoiding honeylocust in turf is a
good thing also.
5. Sugar maples are not very hardy here — will be a problem for us. Will probably not
make it. Needs protection — won't have any in the park. Chris is not happy about
planting these at all.
6. A tree to add would be Turkish Filberts — very formal looking, dark green, drought
tolerant. Increase the number of tree genus /species and reduce the number and any
species where large numbers are currently spec'd. This reduces our susceptibility to
disease and insect invasions. Use Denver parks as guidance as their large number of
unique species are outstanding.
7. There is going to be fencing of recycled material to gp around the trees in the dog
park to reduce compaction around the root areas.
8. Perennials: Cashmere Sage only blooms for about 2 weeks — not enough bang for the
buck. Seems to be mostly mid -late season palette — needs recommendations:
scabiosa, other salvias — need to expand the list to give color from May - September.
How about hardy scrub roses like Bonica, Sea Foam, etc. to provide long- season
color?
9. Substitutions — city must approve any substitutions.
10. Would like to increase the number of ornamentals, even though we'll be sacrificing
shade. Magnolia, hawthorns, etc. should be added to the palette to increase number
of ornamental trees.
The 95% plan will be coming tomorrow, November 19. Kathy took our marked drawings
to share with Shawn at Design Concepts.
Landscape Maintenance Specifications
•
