• <br />• <br />• Avoid aggressive seeders <br />• Low water requirements (not no water) <br />• Plant size appropriate for berm and area within the berm <br />• Plants are available at area nursery unless plant is so outstanding as to stimulate <br />demand at local nurseries <br />• Design groupings to be visually appealing <br />• Long period of visual appeal <br />• Plant great plant combinations <br />• Appropriate for the harsh, windy site as is the arboretum <br />• Avoid the very common low -water plants <br />• Plants should not limited to the native palette <br />• Priority would be given to bird and butterfy attractants <br />Chris to get aerial shots of berms to define area of each plot within the berm. 20 plots on <br />one berm, 16 on the other. So if we stay with one species per plot, we need to narrow the <br />plant selection down to 36 plants. Chris suggested using some other space at the <br />arboretum to plant suggested plant combinations for a more garden look. We will not <br />limited the selections to just perennial plants — shrubs may be nominated. Rabbits may <br />be a problem. All members are expected to come to the January meeting with their list <br />of 6 -10 nominees with supporting recommendations. Bring the nominees and your <br />reasons for the recommendation on 3x5" notecards and be prepared to give a 60 second <br />presentation as to why that nominee should be planted. <br />Arboretum Master Plan <br />No new information to report. Chris would like to present his recommendations and let <br />us add to it. Chris won't know until January whether we have $$ to hire a designer. <br />Michael questioned by we need a designer for the master plan. Chris agreed that HFAB <br />could do the design but we'd probably have to devote 1 hour of our 1.5 hour monthly to <br />the effort. Group agreed it would limit what we need to do. Chris suggested waiting to <br />discuss and develop design criteria until February /March 2004. <br />C. New Business <br />Arbor Day Planning <br />3rd Friday in April is the "real" Arbor Day. <br />Discussions of success and failure of last year's program: Program was great, press was <br />minimal despite our efforts, weather was horrendous (snow and broken branches), and <br />participation was minimal. <br />Should this year's program be in- doors, or wait until later for - outside? <br />Program topic brainstorming yielded: <br />• CSU Cooperative Extension slideshow on xeriscape gardening and plants — <br />approach Kerrie as to her desire /availability to give the presentation <br />
