•
•
LOUISVILLE HORTICULTURE FORESTRY ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING
September 6, 2001
Members Present: Betty Solek, Susan Ariniello, David Russell, Michael Frontczak, Judith Turner,
Nanette Edwards, Susan Spaulding,
Members Absent:
City Liaisons Present: Steve Baysinger, Dave Sexton
Guest Present:
A. General
The meeting was called to order and June minutes were approved.
2. Harper Lake -Youth Corp pulled up mulch around the trees on the west side. Vole
damage seems to have been minimal in the last 2 years. Dave consulted a vole expert,
they are most active in the winter when food is scarce. Irrigation system replaced on the
west side which has 5 valves- remainder of lake has fewer valves, but lines are much
longer and more expensive. Will see how the replaced portion holds up before replacing
the remainder. Dave will send Pete Clements an update.
3. The HFAB board should meet with the Open Space Board before final designations,
based on the inventory, are made in December. This board would like to visit the open
spaces as a group to identify which areas would be important to classify as other so the
city could have more freedom with landscaping options in accordance with the Master
Beautification Plan. Steve will notify members of a Saturday to tour areas. This board
would like to work with Open Space to determine acceptable vegetation.
4. Dave distributed 2001 Goals and they were reviewed. Arboretum -ready to move forward
on overhead irrigation, 2 zones are presently unplanted and valves will be installed for
the future. The outer loop will remain dry when system in on, inner paths will be
watered, system becomes too complicated otherwise. Parking will be part of site design
with new property. January meeting should be devoted to the Arboretum.
5. A homeowner submitted a plan for plantings behind his house on city property for
approval by Dave. He asked the boards opinion and the board thought it would not be
acceptable for the city to maintain the trees which would be planted very close together to
form a screen. The homeowner said he would maintain the plantings, but if the house is
sold the next owner may not feel any responsibility.
6. Meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
7. The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 4, 2001 at the Rec. Center.
