With the redevelopment of the Highway 42 area, he and his
neighbors would like to preserve historic homes in the area. He felt this area is unique
and has a history of an Italian immigrant settlement and was built in 1908.
City Attorney Light asked Mr. Poppitz if he previously sat on the Historic Preservation
Commission. Mr. Poppitz confirmed he at one time sat on the Historic Preservation
Commission. Mayor Muckle asked when Mr. Poppitz resigned from the Historic
Preservation Commission. Mr. Poppitz disclosed he resigned in June.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Jean Morgan, 1231 Spruce Street, Louisville, CO disagreed with the City staff's
recommendation. She stated Josephine Guenzi was locally famous for her
dressmaking skills and Edith Guenzi lived to be 100 years old. The Louisville Museum
has an audio tape of Edith's recollection of early Louisville. She urged the Council to
landmark this property.
Peter Stewart, 1132 Jefferson Avenue, Louisville, CO stated landmarking is totally
voluntary. He stated the Historic Preservation Commission believes this home meets
the minimal thresholds for landmarking.
COUNCIL COMMENT
Council member Jasiak asked how many miner style homes still exist in Louisville.
Planner I Robinson was unsure of the number but stated the City staff and the HPC
looked at other examples of the miner style homes in Miner's Field area and there were
better representations of the miner cabin style house in the area.
Council member Loo inquired whether there was a mention of a national landmarking of
the property. Planner I Robinson stated the Museum Director's statement in the
planning report was the home was not a candidate for national landmarking.
Mayor Muckle favored landmarking the property. Mayor Pro Tem Dalton did not.
Council member Yarnell stated she originally supported staffs recommendation, but
after hearing Mr. Poppitz presentation, she supports the landmarking. Council members
Keany and Jasiak also stated their original support was for staff's recommendation, but
they are undecided at this point.
Council member Keany stated the social significance is important, but he was not
convinced the house was eligible for landmarking.
