Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
October 15, 2012
Page 5of 8
Aaron Dejong, Economic Development Director, presented the specifics of the RFP.He
stated the City is trying to cast as wide of a net as possible to bring in interested parties
to participate in renovating the structure.
Koertje asked if the RFP discusses the City’s preservation fund.
Dejong stated yes.
Koertje asked if there was mention to any other funding sources.
Dejong said we could add more.
Koertje asked if a partner was brought in would the City still retain ownership of the
structure.
Dejong stated that is still up for discussion.
Koertje asked if the RFP is open to creativity and options in regards to the preservation
and reuse of the structure.
Dejong answered in the affirmative.
Stewart stated he wished there was an option that encouraged the least amount of City
funding.
Watson asked if the RFP will be placed in national preservation magazines.
Dejong stated he hadn’t intended on doing that but he will consider it.
Other recommendations for public outreach were recommended.
Stewart stated the RFP should state the reuse should comply with the Secretary of
Interior Standards for Adaptive Reuse of a Historic Structures.
Koertje stated there should be a landmark application submitted as soon as the
structure is acquired.
Dejong agreed.
Lewis stated she does not want the RFP to be too rigid and it should remain open so
there is a call for creativity.
Public Comments
John Leary stated he would hope the chosen option would have the least amount of
impact on the HPF. He also stated he did not think there needed to be such a quick
response to redevelop this structure. There are other financial alternatives that should
be researched.
