Historical Commission
Minutes
December 5, 2012
found the students impressively communicative, articulate, and engaging and believes the
teachers did a great job.
D. Thank you to Brian Chamberlin and Jennifer Strand for their service on Commission.
Brian and Jennifer are both transitioning off the Commission. The two new members will be
Marilyn Hunt and Paula Elrod. Gladys said that she was willing to become the Commission’s
secretary.
E. Commission comments & discussion items for next meeting. None.
F. Close Advisory Board Meeting.
VIII. Meeting as Fundraising Board for the Historical Museum
A. Presentation/Approval of Treasurer’s Report. Dave Ferguson presented the following
report and the members approved it:
Previous Balance: $6,881.39
Expenses: 2,435.58
Receipts: 399.00
CD: 25,178.41
Savings: 20,108.60
Checking: 4,844.81
Total: $50,131.82
B. Creation of a separate foundation (pursuant to decision at April meeting). Gladys
reported her summary of the subcommittee’s research of other Front Range museums with
foundations. Fundraising projects fell into the categories of pure fundraising/requests for
donations, including signing up for Colorado Gives and event fundraising, which included
raffles, book sales, educational events, parties/celebrations and antiques road shows. She
mentioned that she liked applying the framework Bridget brought back from a museum
conference of assessing fundraisers with two criteria: Mission and Value. The best events are
high in both areas. Regarding standing committees, Membership and
Development/Fundraising were most often found. One museum was focused on getting the
next generation involved and found that an ice cream social aimed at children brought in
young families. We have not yet received copies of by-laws from any foundations. The
possibility of applying for grants was touched on. The next subcommittee meeting is Friday,
Jan. 11 at 10:30. Location TBD.
C. Membership, Fundraising, & Events
1. Membership statistics & fundraising report –
see attached.
a. Membership drive & goals for 2012. Dan brought on Chase Bank on Main Street,
which the Commission banks with, as a new Business Sponsor. The Commission
welcomes Chase Bank as a Sponsor. Commissioners are encouraged to gift 2
complimentary memberships for the end of the year, based on the Commission’s
and Museum’s past successes with complimentary members becoming paying
members. Lynn suggested that the Commission work with the Chamber of
Commerce to ask to include a membership flier in a mailer and everyone liked the
idea. No action was taken.
D. Discussion/Direction/Action – Expenses.
1. Approval for the design of a pamphlet showing where the mines in Louisville were located.
The Commission approved up to $250.00 for the design of a Louisville mining map.
