Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Coordinator
Date: March 12, 2013
Re: Museum Coordinator’s Report
I gave a presentation on the history of Louisville to two groups of fellow City employees
th
during a day set aside for employee training on Presidents Day (February 18).
I listened to sessions of the 2012 conference of the American Assn. for State and Local
History (AASLH) that were made available online to registrants. These sessions included
ones on "Localizing Difficult Histories"; "Too Important to Fail: Historic House Museums
Meet Communities' Needs"; and a session on helping boards to function productively.
Two articles by Kimberli Turner about the Historical Museum recently appeared in Colorado
Hometown Weekly: “Louisville Residents' Historic Accounts of Generosity Apparent Today:
1948 Letter Spurs Museum Coordinator to Look into Louisville's Roots in Volunteerism” and
“Louisville Historical Museum Releases Donation Wish List, Needs More Storage Space.”
The volunteers (Debby Fahey and Patty Lester) who helped give a recent school tour for
about 45 third graders from Sanchez Elementary in Lafayette, and I, were very pleased to
read a thank-you card from one of the teachers who wrote, "I was amazed by how your
presentations touched on so many of the units we are teaching this year - resources, how
the past influences the present, and advertising. It was a wonderful experience. We'll be
back!"
The Taste of Louisville is scheduled for Saturday, June 1. Next month, I’ll start to ask
volunteers and Commission members to be on hand for shifts at the Museum that day,
which will likely be one of the days of highest attendance at the Museum this year.
st
Starting April 1, the spring/summer Museum hours will start again. These hours are
Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 3:00, and Fridays from 3:00 to 8:00. The Museum
th
will be open for the First Friday Art Walk on Friday, April 5.
Martin Ogle will give a program at the Library on Wednesday, April 3 at 7 PM entitled “We
Are Here: A Look at Louisville’s Past, Present, and Future.” He will use a PowerPoint
presentation to examine how the local landscape has shaped Louisville’s history and how it
will continue to inform the future of our area. I hope that Commission members will attend!
I will be attending the conference of the Colorado-Wyoming Assn. of Museums, April 25-27,
in Golden.
Museum Visitors Report (these statistics represent visits to the Museum itself, and not
inquiries that come in by email or phone): February visitors: 159; YTD: 267.
