City Council <br />Meeting Minutes <br />May 7, 2013 <br />Page 10 of 16 <br />COUNCIL COMMENTS <br />Council member Loo noted composite shingles, which look like wood, was <br />recommended by the contractor. She asked why the HPC recommended wood <br />shingles. Planner I Robinson stated the HPC felt the wood shingles were more <br />historically significant. He reported the wood shingles are treated and the property <br />owners were willing to take any risks involved to preserve the historic nature. <br />Council member Loo inquired whether the Fire Department was contacted to comment. <br />Planner I Robinson stated not at this time. <br />Ashley Stolzman, 370 S. Taft Court, Louisville, CO reported at the HPC public hearings, <br />the applicant requested a wood shingle and was told those were not allowed, but the <br />HPC decided on a wooden shingle roof when it was discovered they were allowed. The <br />composite shingle was considered, but looked more like a wood shake than shingles. <br />Council member Jasiak voiced her concern over City funds being used for the cost and <br />durability of the wood singles over composite shingles. Principal Planner McCartney <br />stated the garage currently has wood shingles, which held up well and the wood <br />shingles preserve the historic nature. <br />Mayor Muckle appreciated the historic value of restoring the look of the buildings. <br />Council member Loo wondered about the danger of fire with the wood shingles and the <br />impact on neighbors if a fire were to occur. <br />Council member Jasiak asked the applicant to comment about the wood shingles <br />versus the asphalt shingles. <br />APPLICANT PRESENTATION <br />Tommi McHugh, 700 Lincoln Avenue, Louisville, CO explained her understanding that a <br />fire resistant layer is placed on the roof prior to the installation of the wooden shingles. <br />She said the insurance company is willing to insure, cautioning the wood does <br />depreciate, but any hail damage could be replaced shingle by shingle which is easier <br />than composite. <br />Council member Loo did not support HPC funds being spent for a wooden shingle roof. <br />She felt it was a risky process. <br />Ms. McHugh stated they are willing to go with an asphalt roof. Their goal is to do the <br />best they can to preserve the roof and their historic property. <br />Council member Jasiak felt this structure should be preserved. She asked if Council <br />was willing to discuss an alternative roofing material. Mayor Muckle was concerned <br />
