Louisville City Council Meeting <br />June 4, 2002 <br />Page 3 <br /> <br />Davidson called for Staff presentation. <br /> <br />Mayor Pro-Tem Chuck Sisk reported that the City of Louisville Scholarship was created <br />to acknowledge and inspire community and civic involvement. The criterion for the <br />scholarship includes Louisville residency; attendance at a Louisville school for at least <br />the last two years; minimum 2.5 GPA; civic involvement and/or employment with the <br />City of Louisville. Each candidate for the scholarship was required to write a one-page <br />essay titled "My Civic Involvement" or "My Employment with the City of Louisville." <br />Councilmen Chuck Sisk and Arnold Levihn, and Interim Recreation Superintendent <br />Kathy Martin, reviewed the 13 applications for the two $1,000 scholarships. Each <br />applicants name was stricken from the application to promote a fair and impartial review. <br />Sisk announced and recognized the recipients of the 2002 City of Louisville Monarch <br />High School Scholarship: Sonya Hultman and Aron Kirschner. <br /> <br />PRESENTATION - MONARCH HIGH SCHOOL DECA MARKETING <br /> AWARDS <br /> <br />Mayor Davidson reported that students in Monarch High School's marketing education <br />program recently attended the International DECA Career Development Conference in <br />Salt Lake City, Utah. The conference drew 12,000 students, advisors and business judges <br />to participate in four days of competition, workshops and leadership development. <br />Davidson presented certificates of appreciation to the following Monarch High School <br />students who received DECA awards at this year's conference: <br /> Jenna Meyers - 3rd Place - Retail Merchandising Management Level <br /> Kaylan Malm - Top 10 - Retail Merchandising Associate Level <br /> Team ofAlyssa McElwain, Deanna Camell, Nicole Briggs, Keller Nobel - <br /> DECA Chapter of the Year - 3rd Place Diamond Level <br /> <br />PRESENTATION - LOUISVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY NEEDS ASSESSMENT <br /> <br />Davidson called for Staff presentation. <br /> <br />Bridget Bacon, President of the Library Board of Trustees, stated that she has been a <br />board member for eight years and served on the Library Foundation Board. She reported <br />that she and her family are frequent library users; and have seen the impact of the City's <br />growth on the library. She voiced her belief that the Library Staff does a superb job in <br />providing services to a community of 19,000 people. She stated that the library is an <br />undersized facility and is insufficient in providing quiet study areas, adequate seating and <br />shelf space and programming for both adults and children. She reviewed the process that <br />was followed by the Library Needs Assessment Team and stated that at Council's <br />direction, a team was appointed to assess the needs of the library and evaluate the cost for <br />library sites including the existing site. The team was made up of members of the Board <br />of Trustees, Library Foundation Board Members, and Library Staff and City <br />Administration.
