Open Space Advisory Board
Meeting Notes
September 11th, 2013
• Language re: the off -leash area will be changed to reflect the
fact that it will be closed during construction;
• Alternative dog parks / off -leash areas will be identified;
• Stickers will be used to keep the dates / timeline up -to -date.
o It is anticipated that Code Enforcement will be active to enforce the
closures.
• Colorado Open Space Alliance Conference:
o While at the conference, Ember met with the Leave No Trace
organization. This organization is open to participation with smaller
municipalities who wish to educate the public about the leave no
trace principle. To that end, the organization will allow "members"
or co- working municipalities to use language and /or other materials
in exchange for a small fee.
o OSAB expressed a strong interest in following up with this
organization for the following purposes:
• Leave No Trace has recently completed a scientifically
accurate analysis on a number of open space topics related
to signage. One finding is that people are much more likely
to adhere to the rules at an open space when they
understand the reasons for the rules.
• OSAB would be interested in a presentation about this
organization's work.
• Additionally, OSAB identified this group's work- product as
potentially useful in the on -going way finding project.
• Denver Metro Coyote Behavior Survey:
o Colorado State University is conducting the study with others.
o The survey relies on two elements: Information collected from
managers and cities, and from collaring and tracking efforts.
o Initial results have come in, and the initial analysis of the data is
being undertaken.
o Ember will check in to see when the results are ready. She will
explore the possibility for a presentation to OSAB.
o Coyote expert Mary Ann Bonell with the City of Aurora may be
another excellent resource because of her vast experience with
coyotes. OSAB additionally expressed interest in hearing a
presentation from her.
• The new Davidson Mesa Ridgeline Trail is completed. Additionally, efforts
to control weeds at Davidson Mesa are paying off; there are not nearly as
many weeds this season!
• Four board members' terms are expiring in December. If these individuals
wish to reapply, the application is due in November.
3
