Golf Course Advisory Board Minutes
June 17 2013
Recreation. The recommendation to Council includes a provision to transfer
some funds from other projects in the Parks and Rec. budget as the 2013Golf
Course budget has been consumed. WGP will contribute $5000 to the project as
well as providing labor to lay down the sand at the completion of the construction.
The Board commended City Staff and WGP for their support of this project.
Work will start on September 9 and is planned to complete in 6 weeks. The
Board agreed with the recommendation to use sod as the liner. Preparatory
work will start in the next few days and involves applying Roundup® to kill the
existing sod in the work area. WGP undertook to provide notices to golfers
informing them of the work. Rick Phelps will oversee the project. Time is
required after the sod is put down to allow it to consolidate and we should not
expect the new bunkers to be playable until some time in December depending
on weather conditions. New sod surrounding the renovated bunkers will be
marked us “Ground Under Repair” until Spring to help protect this newly laid
grass. This will involve significant disruption to play with temporary greens
constructed so clear communication of the project to golfers is essential. Notices
will be posted in the Clubhouse and the Men’s and Women’s Leagues will be
asked to communicate with their members.
b) Update on new trees planted last Fall
Chris Lichty advised that approximately 50% of the Ponderosa Pines planted last
year had died and are being replaced. The issues appear to be root girdling, a
form of Pine Beetle and last winter’s weather conditions. (Secretary’s Note: A
tree is girdled when something is tightly wrapped around the trunk or stem. A
stem girdling root circles or partially circles the base of a tree at or just below the
soil surface Stem girdling roots choke off the flow of water and nutrients between
the roots and branches and food produced in the leaves from reaching the roots,)
Only one deciduous tree has died. New trees have been provided under
warranty and will be planted in the next few weeks. Chris Lichty and WGP staff
will monitor the new trees and ensure that they are properly watered. Depending
on weather conditions, monthly watering over the winter months should be
appropriate. No fertilization is needed.
c) Root pruning plan
Chris Lichty explained his report on roots encroaching on the 5th, 6th, 18th and
Practice Green. His plan is to provide a 24” high bio-barrier of fabric
impregnated with contact herbicide. This approach was used successfully at
Lakewood CC. A trench will be dug per his illustrations and the trench and
barrier fabric laid over any large diameter roots so as to avoid compromising the
stability of the tree. The work should take 2 days per hole. Roots that are
smaller in diameter than 2” can be cut without creating stability issues. This
project can be approved at City Staff level without requiring full council approval.
The Board unanimously approved this plan and work is expected to start in
December. As a separate issue, the problem of ice build-up due to shading of
the 6th green was discussed and it was agreed that WGP Staff will trim down the
low level bushes to the South of the green. This will help avoid shading the low
angle winter sun and also promote more air circulation. Chris Lichty advised that
these steps were appropriate low-cost solutions with a good chance of success.

3
