Golf Course Advisory Board Minutes
June 17 2013
Item V Staff / WGP Report on Remediation of Course Conditions
WGP reported that work to recover from the winter damage was continuing with
good success. Chairman Gambon concurred and noted that a detailed, if
subjective, set of observations on course conditions bore this out. This report is
ready for final review and will be published shortly. The course is being
deliberately kept very wet to encourage healing of remaining winter damage.
Although greens are being cut to the same length as last year, they are
noticeably slower (7 on the Stimpmeter compared to the usual 9) but putt very
well. .Greens are being top-dressed and Verti-cut weekly. WGP plans to strip
level and re-turf the back tee-boxes on holes 5, 11 and 17. This commitment
was welcomed by the Board as addressing another issue reported by golfers.
With an appropriate communication plan, this will be seen as another good
example of work being undertaken to improve the course.

Item VI. WGP Report
i & ii Optimization of Free Winter Golf Program
The Board discussed the benefits and issues of the Peak Player free winter golf
program. The concern was that incenting higher player numbers in December,
January and February led to increased damage to the course without any
additional revenue. It was suggested that a nominal fee per round be required
for Peak Player winter golf with the proceeds being applied to course
maintenance. WGP doubted that this would be advantageous and noted that
although golf was free, revenue came in from cart fees, range balls and the
limited food and beverage service. The objective is to maximize total rounds
throughout the year by using the free program to attract golfers. After discussion,
it was agreed that no change should be made. WGP will analyze Peak Player
data to see how many golfers only come for the free golf and then go elsewhere
for the rest of the year.
iii Steps to minimize Winter Damage
WGP plans to water the course aggressively for as long as possible. Aeration
will be performed on Sep 14 after the final league tournaments of the year.
WGP also stated that all known irrigation issue will be fixed before the system is
shut down for winter. It was noted that the last two weeks were the first time the
new booster pump for the last 5 holes has been fully operation and is performing
satisfactorily.
Eric Jensen conducted a show-and-tell illustrating the major irrigation failures this
year. We are now past the expected end-of-life for the system and we are
seeing gluing failures from the original installation and rusting of the large
diameter steel couplings – all end-of-life symptoms. A pin-hole leak in one
coupling was shown and, although a small hole, it caused a leak calculated as
1400 gallons per hour with a spectacular geyser. It is becoming apparent that
the rate of failures is increasing and catastrophic failure may be close. WGP
undertook to report the annual rate of problems in terms of major issues,
significant failures and $ spent in repair so a definitive case can be made when
we bring a request for funding to City Council.
4
