Where possible we find volunteer opportunities for self - advocates that allow them to leam skills that boost <br />self- sufficiency and employment skills. <br />In 2012 we disbursed $5,215 in financial aid and assisted people to apply for aid through a variety of other <br />organizations and programs. <br />b) Goals <br />Goal #1: <br />Protect the rights of people with IIDD to live self- determined lives, free from mistreatment, abuse, <br />neglect and exploitation, and experience improved health, safety and community connections by <br />accessing: <br />a. Advocacy to address inadequacies in service provision, mistreatment, abuse, neglect and <br />exploitation. <br />b. Affordable housing, health care services, public benefits, transport, and employment services. <br />c. Educational programs and social events. <br />d. Support services and financial aid to manage crises. <br />e. Volunteer Advocates to help build community networks and reduce isolation. <br />Goal #2: <br />Caregivers will plan for the transition in care giving while continuing as primary caregiver as a <br />result of receiving guidance and support to: <br />a. Understand, access and maintain public benefits for themselves and the person they care for. <br />b. Access health care and other community resources. <br />c. Understand the Medicaid service delivery system and advocate for their loved ones who <br />receive or are on a waitlist for these services. <br />d. Manage crises. <br />e. Plan for a future transition in caregiver and provide guidance in the event of a sudden Toss of a <br />caregiver. <br />Goal #3: <br />Parents will fees less isolated and more able to independently advocate for their sons and <br />daughters entitlement to a free and appropriate public education by accessing: <br />a. Technical assistance, advice, resources, referrals, and information. <br />b. Parent trainings designed to teach about special education and advocacy techniques and <br />connect parents with each other. <br />c. Direct advocacy services to negotiate improved access to special education services and <br />supports. <br />d. Facilitated therapeutic parent support groups that offer opportunities to give and receive <br />support. <br />e. Transition conference and workshops to learn about and plan for the transition to adulthood. <br />Goal #4: <br />Promote self - advocacy, self-determination and health and safety through education, support and <br />assistance related to: <br />a. Rights and appropriate ways to advocate for self and others. <br />b. Healthy lifestyle, the signs of illness /injury, basic first aid, managing stress, using 911 <br />appropriately, disaster preparedness, personal safety and healthy relationships. <br />c. Living independently skills including cooking, transportation, employment, budgeting, literacy, <br />recreation and leisure, and housing. <br />Goal #5: <br />Advocate for systems that efficiently and effectively meet the needs of people with IIDD and their 13 <br />
