The program was created to allow the ACL to efficiently and cost effectively promote self -
sufficiency among self - advocates, meet the wide range of needs expressed by this growing number of
people, and build organizational capacity to meet the needs of people newly eligible under the expanded
definition of DD. We continue to provide intensive individual advocacy to people until they are stable
enough to have their needs met through Getting Organized, and as needed to those accessing the program
who face a crisis. Getting Organized was piloted in Longmont and we plan to expand it to serve other
communities in late 2013/early 2014. 56 people currently access this program.
On The Road - Transition to Adulthood: This parent and youth education program is entering its 5th year.
The ACL collaborates with Boulder Valley and St Vrain Valley School Districts to provide this multi- session
program that focuses on increasing parents understanding of adult systems, community network building,
school -based transition planning and many other topics related to life beyond the public school system.
Over 45 families access this program annually.
Emergency Services Training:
The ACL provides training to police, sheriff, ambulance, victim assistance and fire services personnel.
These trainings are designed to educate these vital service providers how to effectively work with and
support people with 1 /00 and to raise awareness of such issues as the staggering rate of crime against
people with IIDD.
In 2012, 221 emergency service personnel were trained. So far in 2013, 100 emergency service personnel
have been trained.
Other ACL trainings delivered in 2012113:
Equity, diversity and inclusion
Self - advocacy
Special Education
Negotiating and managing conflict
Healthy diet and exercise
Volunteering in the community
Oral hygiene
Smoking cessation
Safe sex
First Aid /CPR
Public policy advocacy
Autism 101
Executive function disorder
Person centered planning
Guardianship and trust funds
Financial Aid Program
The ACL provides financial aid to people with I /DD and their families.
