Staff has found this application complies with the above criterion by the following:
Architectural Significance — Exemplifies specific elements of an
architectural style or period.
740 Front is one of the few remaining examples of early commercial
construction in Louisville. Its unusual front entrance location and unique
roofline make it stand out among Louisville buildings.
Social Significance - Exemplifies cultural. political. economic or social
heritage of the community.
740 Front has served as a bar, restaurant, and gathering place for over
100 years. It was also strongly associated with the culture and social lives
of early Italian immigrants to Louisville.
Geographic Significance — Enhances sense of identity of the community.
740 Front is one of the oldest and most recognizable buildings in
downtown Louisville and exemplifies the historic character of the area.
RECOMMENDATION:
The structure appears to have maintained significant architectural integrity since its
construction around 1904. The overall form, especially the roofline, has been
maintained. The building also represents an important commercial style and serves as
an indicator of downtown Louisville's historic roots. It is one of only two remaining
original Front Street saloons.
Staff suggests the house be named for the Di Francia family who had the current
structure built and operated the first tavern there.
Staff recommends the application to landmark the Di Francia Saloon be approved for
the following reasons:
1. The structure has retained the form of its important commercial style: and
2. The structure was associated with several businesses and the Italian immigrant
community throughout the years in Louisville; and
3. The structure is a prominent building in downtown Louisville.
SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION AND INFORMATION:
Attached for your review are the following documents:
• Landmark Application
• Social History
• Survey form from 2000
• Resolution
7
