I Cityof
Louisville
PARKS & RECREATION
Memorandum
To: Joe Stevens, Director of Parks & Recreation
From: Chris Lichty, City Forester
Date: January 17th, 2014
Re: 2014 Tree Work at Coal Creek Golf Course
The Coal Creek Golf Course Disaster Recovery Project includes recommendations for additional tree
management work. These recommendations were formulated by Herfort/Norby Golf Course Architects
with input from City of Louisville staff. The majority of this work is related to the damage caused by the
flood of late 2013. As part of the redesign of the course, holes affected by the flood need additional
tree removal and pruning to accomplish the goals of the redesign. A hole by hole analysis identifies
specific areas for tree management and will guide the process. After meeting with Kevin Norby and
City staff, a consensus was reached as to the extent of tree management. The City will be taking a
conservative approach to tree management on the course but will address all the high priority issues
immediately. These issues fall into two basic categories: trees that affect playability and turf quality and
trees impacted by the flood that are hazardous. An inventory of all trees to be removed or pruned is
currently underway and bids will be solicited in early February 2014. Work should start in mid to late
February and conclude in mid April.
It is anticipated that tree work should proceed smoothly because of favorable conditions related to
access to work locations and dormancy of the trees.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Respectfully,
Chris Lichty
