Louisville Sustainability Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
February 19, 2014
Zero waste: Ashley brought up an issue: For events more than 50 people the City wants to require
zero waste, but the DBA is pushing back and just want to put on music for the Street Faire. The City
currently provides $10,000 and more for zero waste efforts. Several questions need to be answered.
For example: What should we do to cover all qualifying events? What is the City’s role? Do we
continue to require zero waste? What about compostable forks?
Ashley asked if the LSAB could help do some research, address particular questions and set up a
proposed policy for the City. Several ideas were discussed regarding the zero waste for events larger
than 50 people: Can Western Disposal or RFP winner help out, zero waste signs – could they be
simpler? We need the City’s requirement to be less onerous, We can’t make an unfunded mandate.
Mark pointed out that one way or the other, event sponsors have to provide items and disposal, so
why is zero waste so onerous? Etc.
Issues surrounding recruiting volunteers, volunteer training were discussed. Eco cycle may be a
resource. List of suppliers may be provided, etc.
Tom B. pointed out that zero waste is important because it reflects on the City. Tom hopes that City
can help recruit volunteers.
Mark and Justine volunteered to help out by leading LSAB’s effort to develop zero waste policy for the
city.
Arts and Special Events Coordinator: Louisville has one now!
VI. Review of 2013 - 2014 Goals: Prepare a summary of LSAB’s 2013 accomplishments; discuss
goals for 2014 (carry-over and new); and prepare a presentation for our February 25th study session
with City Council.
Jim Bradford agreed to present LSAB accomplishments and goals for 2014 at the 2/25/2014 study
session with City Council
VII. Discussed thoughts for developing a sustainability roadmap for the City of Louisville
Including putting sustainable guidelines on city web site
Mailing list to disseminate information to citizens
Buy in of the solar panels bank near the water tower (lets discuss economics)
VIII: Adjourn:We adjourned at approximately 8:00 pm.
