Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Nlinutes
June 16, 2014
Stewart asked if there have been any reports documenting their review of the request such as
dates of construction or condition of repair.
Robinson stated the connection of the existing rear building, specifically the foundation, is in
bad shape.
Fahey stated the side elevation shows a significant grade change and asked if that is the
existing condition.
Robinson stated that is the existing condition.
Watson asked if there was a date for the age of the rear building.
Robinson stated the 1948 image shows it but there isn't any additional information to show the
construction date.
Applicant Presentation
Andy Johnson, architect for the project, presented. He stated the existing structure will be
restored to the images we have from 1948 and 1952. He stated the project will include the
following:
• Siding will be restored and replaced
• Cornice will be restored and replaced
• Doors and windows will be restored
• Steps will be replaced with code compliant steps
• The structural assessment does not encourage restoring the existing addition
• The front building will be expanded with additional office /commercial space to the rear
of the building and a new two unit residential building will be placed to the west of the
office /commercial building
• The intent is to match the historic building in size and scale but be designed to
differentiate itself from the historical structure.
La Grave asked what the percentage of the original structure will remain.
Johnson stated about 50 %.
Stewart said he appreciates the thought that has gone into the design of this project. He
inquired clarification of the landmark, stating it appears to be for the front 26 feet 10 inches,
which is the original commercial building and the second structure is not part of the landmark
structure.
Johnson stated he is correct.
Robinson stated the alteration certificate is for the existing structure and for the landmarked
property. He stated the addition and the new building would require an alteration certificate
