Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Coordinator
Date: August 26, 2014
Re: Museum Master Plan
The Louisville City Council recently adopted goals and objectives for 2015. One of the
objectives under the goal of “Protect and Preserve Louisville’s History” is “Develop and adopt
Museum Master Plan.”
The adoption of a museum master plan typically is a coordinated effort between museum staff
and board members. Commonly, there is a steering committee that works on the master plan
and then brings it to the board (in this case, the Historical Commission) for approval. It is not
unusual to have a workshop or meeting with a paid facilitator to assist in developing a master
plan.
As you know, this fall, a Needs Assessment by consultants of our Museum is to take place. A
report containing recommendations is to be produced at the end of the process. It is anticipated
that there will be community input sought for the Needs Assessment. Due to the convenient
timing and the advantage of having input from museum consultants and the community, the
Needs Assessment process and report will provide a basis on which we can develop the
Museum Master Plan.
In the meantime, for this fall, I would like to propose that members of the Historical Commission
engage in two activities that will help provide important information for the upcoming Needs
Assessment process, then the Museum Master Plan process:
Set a date and time for me to give Historical Commission members an updated tour of
all of the existing Museum facilities; and
Develop a plan for outings to other museums in our area, particularly the city museums
in Longmont, Golden, and Littleton, which are Louisville’s labor market cities that own
museums that are open to the public. Other museums could certainly be destinations,
also. The purpose would be to gather information about other museum facilities in other
cities, see how they are being used, and see what features the Historical Commission
might want to recommend for our Museum in order for it to better fulfill its mission.
