Approved – September 18, 2003
Residence Inn in September 1998 with two wall signs, one located near the main building entry
and not visible from the public streets, and a second wall sign on the north (Dillon Road)
elevation. The sign on the north was approved as reverse pan channel letters (backlit), with a
maximum height of 24-inches. This sign was relocated to the west elevation as part of the
building permit approval to provide better visibility for their guests arriving from McCaslin and
traveling eastbound on Dillon Road.

Staff reported that the management at Residence Inn has expressed concern with the amount of
signage they have on their building. Because of the specific sign package approved on the PUD,
there is limited flexibility to modify their signs. The request before the Commission required a
public hearing for the following reasons: 1) the location of signs, 2) the method of illumination
and 3) the number of signs. Staff discussed in detail the above reasons.

Staff is recommending approval of Resolution No. 17, Series 2003 with one condition that is
administrative in nature: If approved by City Council, the applicant shall be required to submit an
amended final PUD development plan sheet with sign details, appropriate signature blocks, etc.,
subject to staff review and approval and to be recorded with the Boulder County Clerk and
Recorder.

Commission Questions:
McAvinew asked if the Commissioners had any questions for Staff. None heard.

Applicant Presentation:
Brian Rick, 1995 Clipper Dr, Lafayette, CO thanked the Commission for hearing the request this
evening and thanked Johnstone for his presentation. He stated that the client he represents is
sensitive to how the motel fits into the residential neighborhood. He also expressed concern with
the illumination style because it does show up well.

Commission Questions:
McAvinew asked if the Commissioners had questions for the applicant.

Kalish stated that her question is for Staff. She requested information on the type of lighting at
the Hampton Inn location.
Johnstone stated that it is internally lit.

Commissioners had no other questions.

Members of the Public:
McAvinew asked if any one in the audience had come to speak. None heard.

Staff Summary and Recommendation:
Staff provided no additional summary.

Applicant Summary:
Applicant provided no additional summary.

Public Hearing Closed Commission Comments:

6
