Notes from golf course tour August 13 2014
GCAB Members Present: Ken Gambon, Lisa Norgard, Dennis Maloney, Sandy Stewart
GCAB Members Absent: Tom Deany, Perry Nelson, Heikke Nielsen.
Senior Board Advisor: Ron Sackett
Council Member: Jay Keany
City Staff: Malcolm Fleming, Cameron Fowlkes, Joe Stevens, Allan Gill, Chris Bradford
Members of Public: John Reilly (Men's Club) Kevin Norby (Golf Course Architect)
Summary
An encouraging and detailed view of progress on the Coal Creek restoration.
Schedule: Overall, Landscapes Unlimited estimate that they are approximately 4 weeks behind
schedule. Due to unexpected problems with groundwater etc., the schedule had slipped by
about 6 weeks but steps have been taken to reduce the slip. Additional staff has been brought
in (60 at present) and sod is being used in places instead of seed. Two crews are working in
parallel on shaping. City Staff and LU management have burned a lot more time than expected
in FEMA documentation. Staff was commended for good husbandry of the City funding.
Budget: We are still on track to meet the not -to- exceed $5M budget. The GMP has been
amended to include the estimated $400K grow -in expense with the expectation that FEMA will
cover the portion that we can demonstrate to be flood- damage. Response from FEMA is
positive so far. The City has approved payments to LU for approximately 50% of the budget for
work performed to date. Kevin Norby stated that approximately $75K of the Contractor's
Contingency has been consumed and the entire Owner's Contingency has been approved for
the Punchbowl Green and improved practice area. Staff has not yet committed funding to run
water and sewer to the planned restroom but no problem is foreseen in doing this.
Detailed Items:
• the booster pump has been installed and is being connected. With the pump working,
irrigation on holes #15 and #16 can start.
• working with CDOT on the HWY 36 boundary. CDOT will pay for trees and these are planned
to be planted in the Fall.
• CDOT will provide additional funding that can be used for other trees and this will allow us to
do more tree planting than we originally expected. Both deciduous and evergreen species will
be used.
• In the interests of schedule, tree planting will take second priority to the critical path tasks of
shaping and grassing. Most tree planting will be done next Spring and, on the advice of Chris
Lichty, we will use smaller trees (2" to 4" diameter) as these are more robust and will save
money. Some larger trees will be used where we feel we need to make a more immediate
impact statement.
• Trees are a high priority for the public and their input will be solicited at the planned Open
House. Surrounding homeowners will be approached on a one -on -one basis where
appropriate.
2
