Opportunities:
• Local neighborhood connections exist (tertiary
segments)
• Many existing city -wide corridors /spines exist with
minimal improvements on the ground for smooth
contiguous connections
• Smartphone trail apps can provide users (public
engagement opportunity)
• Many primary nodes for connections exist (public
engagement opportunity)
Considerations:
1. Budget
2. Phasing
3. Compatibility with existing sign system
4. Minimizing sign clutter
5. Minimizing future maintenance
6. Encouragement of intuitive wayfinding
Task: Information Gathering, Sign Planning
and Design
Our process for designing wayfinding signage systems
begins with the organization and hierarchy of trail
corridors as well as a hierarchy of messaging. From
this, a "family" of signage components is introduced,
with conceptualizations for color palette, typography,
and materials, creating a visual style that is appropriate
to and reflective of the Louisville Trail System. Scale
within the environment and consistency in branding
and identity will be considered throughout the process,
to ensure a cohesive program is achieved, and a
memorable experience for the visitor is created.
The team will consult with all stakeholders to
incorporate all existing branding into three design
concepts. A final redesign for the typical signs will be
selected and C +B Design will develop the concepts
to final design development stage. A sign plan will
then be produced, ensuring that all messages are
communicated efficiently and clearly. Lastly, finalized
art and construction documents and drawings will be
prepared, ensuring quality fabrication and installation.
Estimates for fabrication will be provided.
We believe that directional and information signs
should be provided at key intersections or change of
direction. Direction signs are placed in advance of
turns and confirmation are placed directly after the turn
so the path user confirms they are on the right route.
Where the route is located on the roadway, a series
of continuously visible confirmation signs should be
used throughout the route. The confirmation signs can
be small and mounted on existing sign structures, but
should be easily identified.
Our team will consider all of the possible ways that
users will flow through the trail corridor. We will locate
nodes of circulation, amenities, attractions, emergency
response systems, shopping districts and facilities.
Data will be collected, and then applied to an on -site
detailed investigation. We will literally put ourselves in
the shoes of the users, breaking down the corridor into
a set of possible decision points using a consistent,
repeated set of messages along the way. We will look
at existing signs and maps and remove the clutter,
reducing the information so that the users are exposed
to precise, uniform and ambient information. Our goal
is to create a wayfinding system that will be almost
subconscious when in place.
As the content and verbal style of the signage system
emerges, visuals, photographs, maps, illustrations,
typography, and color palettes will be collected
and designed, and placed into a preliminary layout/
schematic design. Client feedback will be collected,
and revisions made. All existing stakeholders will be
included and a system for including all entities will
be developed. Upon design approval, final art will
be completed, and sent to the selected fabricator for
estimates.
